In a deeply personal solo performance, Samir Calixto traces the path from his Brazilian origins to the present point in his artistic development. The title says it all: RAIZ, meaning “root” in Portuguese.
Originally trained as a classical singer, choreographer Samir Calixto is known for his distinctive way of drawing inspiration from iconic works of Western music history to create compelling dance performances. Less known, however, is that for Samir, this work has always existed in dialogue with his Brazilian roots and heritage. As a young child, he grew up participating in Afro-Brazilian rituals in which music and movement were used to reconnect people with their deepest origins. It was in these séances that many of his roots were formed. A wealth of rhythms and sounds, combined with a specific sense of urgency, entered his life and played a decisive role in shaping his artistic identity.

De oorspronkelijk als klassieke zanger opgeleide choreograaf Samir Calixto staat bekend om de eigenzinnige manier waarop hij iconische werken uit de westerse muziekgeschiedenis als inspiratie voor meeslepende dansvoorstellingen neemt. Minder bekend is dat dit werk voor Samir zelf altijd in dialoog staat met zijn Braziliaanse oorsprong en erfgoed. Als klein kind groeide hij op met het deelnemen aan Afro-rituelen waarin muziek en beweging werden gebruikt om mensen weer in contact te brengen met hun diepste oorsprong. Het was in deze 'seances' waar veel van zijn wortels liggen. Een rijkdom aan ritmes en klanken gekoppeld aan een specifiek gevoel van urgentie deed zijn intrede in zijn leven en droeg beslissend bij aan de vorming van zijn artistieke identiteit.
