Durf jij echt te luisteren naar jezelf? Naar de innerlijke stemmen die je vertellen te vluchten voor wat je niet wil aangaan, of die je juist terugroepen naar wat echt belangrijk is? In Closed Eyes nodigt Alida Dors je uit om je af te sluiten van alle dagelijkse prikkels. Open je ogen en durf te dromen.
Een jonge man daalt af naar de plek waar de lokroep voor hem hoorbaar is: in de diepte van het Surinaamse Brokopondo-stuwmeer, waar ooit zijn voorouders woonden. Met poëtische dans, filmbeelden, opzwepende livemuziek en krachtige spoken word van Alida Dors zelf dompelen zeven dansers en drie musici je onder in een magisch parallel universum. Closed Eyes is een uitnodiging om je te laten leiden door je dromen, in een wereld tussen verleden, heden en toekomst. Ter inspiratie ging Dors met een crew naar Suriname. Ze filmden boven Ganzee, het dorp van haar voorouders, dat verdween onder het water van het stuwmeer. ‘Mijn voorouders hebben gedroomd voor hun kleinkinderen. Ik wilde terug naar de plek waar zij die dromen hebben gedroomd. Waar zij leefden.’
Alida Dors is theatermaker, choreograaf en artistiek directeur van Theater Rotterdam. Ze maakt interdisciplinaire dance chronicles met invloeden uit hiphop en moderne dans, zoals Primisi, R.I.O.T. en Or Die Trying. Vorig seizoen bracht Alida Dors de krachtige dansvoorstelling (Sur)render op het podium.
Closed Eyes is an invitation to listen to your inner voices - those voices that sometimes urge you to run away from challenges, or that call you back to your roots and embrace you for who you are. A reservoir and a submerged city where ancestors once lived become a metaphor for the search for identity and connection with the past.
In a fusion of explosive, fragile, and intimate dance; lingering film images; mosaic live music, and spoken word, Closed Eyes creates a magical-realistic world that bridges the past, present, and future. A world in which the characters navigate through a landscape of dreams and memories. An exploration of the ways in which ancestors and their experiences influence lives and how these influences can help us find our own way in the world. For inspiration, Dors went with a crew to Suriname. They filmed above Ganzee, the village of her ancestors, which disappeared by flooding. Alida: 'My ancestors had dreams for their grandchildren. I wanted to return to the place where they dreamed those dreams. Where they lived.'
Alida Dors is a theater maker, choreographer, and artistic director of Theater Rotterdam. She creates interdisciplinary dance chronicles with influences from hip-hop and modern dance, such as (Sur)render, Primisi, R.I.O.T., and Or Die Trying. Last season she did the choreography for the acclaimed performance The Story of Travis.
